The Herbert has extensive and wide ranging collections which are grouped under four broad headings:
• Visual Arts
• Social and Industrial History
• Archaeology
• Natural History

The museum collections contain hundreds of thousands of items ranging from tiny insects to large industrial machinery like a jacquard loom, and from everyday household objects to fine paintings by important artists.

Summer Holidays: Time Travelling Tales

Go back in time to the age of the Vikings and come face to face with historical characters as they share family friendly stories of times gone by.
11am, 1pm and 3pm every Tuesday and Thursday during the holidays.
Storytelling sessions are suitable for age 3+, but all are welcome.
Duration: Approximately 15-20 minutes

Our childminder session is an opportunity for you to meet with other child care providers, increases your children’s social experiences, and we will offer additional support if needed during the session to help you when caring for multiple children.

Open to all: 11.30pm – 12.00pm
Have fun and explore our galleries through songs, stories and rhymes in these inventive Early Years sessions. Explore our collections through songs, stories, movement and sensory play. A regular chance to get your little one learning with friends.

Creative Car Factory – Family Workshops

Join us in our Creative Car Factory this summer and be a real life ‘Cartist’. Create your very own model, and help us build a full size ‘car’ inspired by our Cartists exhibition. Every week, our workshop will focus on a different stage of car manufacture from incredible ideas, all the way through to the fabulous finishes. Join us every week to explore all stages and build your very own model car or join us for one of the workshops to make one car part to take home.

Summer Holidays: The Vikings Have Landed

Boats, fires, swords galore, dragons, weaving, beards and more! From sparkly fish and seascapes to pretend campfires and cloud spinning, explore the Viking world of crafts, combat, mythology and much more. With a different craft activity each day we have something for everyone this summer.

A Really Roman Summer

Explore the unique Lunt Roman Fort this summer; stand on the ramparts, imagine yourself training horses in the Gyrus, and drop in to our fantastic Roman themed workshops. Play Roman games, dig in our ‘archaeological finds’ sandpit or create your own helmet, shield or soldier in a weekly themed workshops.
