Why not use your Green Day event to boost your pupils’ numeracy? Working with ‘real’ data is always inspiring for pupils and you’ll be helping them to improve their general knowledge at the same time as their maths skills.

In this series of lessons, pupils complete a small statistical project. Using data which they can obtain from the Met Office website they compare the carbon emissions of different countries or different towns, presenting their findings using appropriate diagrams or charts. Asking them to present their results to the rest of the class will also help to develop their speaking skills.

This resource has been developed by Kent County Council’s Children, Families and Education learning team. It builds on the activity Create Climate Charts from p17 of the Green Day teacher’s activity kit. The kit also contains a host of other maths activities, helping you to spice up your lessons and teach about buildings, spaces and climate change.

Green Day is an event for schools aiming to help them run more sustainably. Over 1000 schools will take part between June 4 and July 2 2010. Let us know that you’re using this resource as part of a Green Day by registering to take part.
