Resource review: Create-a-scape website

By Susan Elkin | 23 December 2008

This imaginative website, provided by Futurelab, allows students to create their own mediascape - a multimedia map of sounds, images and video footage.

It’s an ingenious idea. Free software enables students to add sounds, images and video to a digital map of any area, using headphones and a hand-held computer. There is scope for including many buildings, places and community spaces.

The website provides clear instructions and the process works well if you follow it step by step. There is a good teachers’ area, a library of ready-made mediascapes and a wealth of helpful information. It’s hard to disagree with the year 7 teacher quoted on the Create-a-scape website who says, ‘whatever the subject, mediascape makes it more exciting.’

Key stages: all

Key subjects: all

Built environment education: buildings and places, community issues, citizenship & identity, location, urban and rural planning.
