Resource review: How we built Britain

By Susan Elkin | 23 December 2008

Tucked away in a corner of RIBA’s website is a splendid online exhibition mounted in partnership with the BBC. It presents 1,000 years of easily browsable built environment history - no mean feat. The website was originally built to complement the BBC TV series, 'How We Built Britain', and is still available as an excellent resource.

The exhibition is arranged in periods. Click on Medieval, for example, for clearly presented text and images relating to Ely Cathedral, Castle Heddingham, Lavenham, Exburgh Hall, Cambridge University and various parish churches.

You can also browse by area, so you can explore your region, or find prominent buildings and places in your locality.

The images are matched with detailed historical and architectural information. This is handy if you are looking for a trustworthy website for research projects for your students.

Key stages: 2 and 3, and post-16

Key subjects: history, geography, art & design, religious education

Built environment education: heritage, community issues, citizenship & identity, building conservation, buildings and places

Access from the RIBA website
