Resource review: RIBApix, an online image bank

By Susan Elkin | 23 December 2008

RIBApix is an excellent online resource that gives you access to thousands of pictures, most of them photographs that you can share with students. The pictures are free to download for educational or personal use. An unobtrusive but clear RIBA watermark protects the copyright.

You can find images using the alphabetical index, which is arranged by building type. For example, under C you will find ‘cathedrals’, which in turn drills down to thumbnails of dozens of different cathedrals. Click on Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool and the site takes you to the image, with data and facts about the building alongside it. One more click saves it to your computer. The images of the Victorian pig market arch and public toilets in Saffron Walden are lovely, to mention just two selected at random (search under P for ‘public conveniences’!)

RIBApix allows easy access to good quality images of almost any building you are likely to want in the classroom, making it an invaluable source of research materials which can be accessed quickly and easily.
