Resource review: English Heritage TV

By Susan Elkin | 23 December 2008

Presented via English Heritage’s website and in association with the History Channel is a series of good quality, informative short films under the heading ‘Explore our properties’.

A selection of English Heritage’s major properties is featured. Each clip is fronted by a well known person, such as Jon Snow presenting Dover Castle, Konnie Huq for Osborne House and Neil Oliver for Hadrian’s Wall.

Production values are quite high and the system is easy to navigate. You can watch each film live on the internet, using a computer or electronic whiteboard for whole class work. Alternatively, you can download the podcast (through iTunes) and store the films on your own computer to use when you like.

These films would be useful as an introduction before taking students to visit a building, or as a substitute for a visit if, say, the building is temporarily closed or a long way from your school.

Key stages: 2, 3 and 4

Key subjects: history, geography, art & design

Built environment education: heritage, buildings and places, building conservation, archaeology
