By Rochelle Whitty, education editor | 22 December 2008

The Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) website provides teachers with a helpful collection of school and classroom case studies that cover a variety of topics, curricula and formats.

Each case study is presented in a free, downloadable pdf document, which you can save and print. The case studies vary in length, but provide helpful information on the project, learning outcomes, project images and contact details.

We have selected two case studies that focus on using buildings and places in teaching and learning. Each heading below in blue will take you directly to the case study on the LOtC website.

Urban redevelopment in Paris
This case study centres on a geography class visit to Paris to investigate a variety of urban redevelopment sites. You will find a step-by-step outline of fieldwork activities, tips and student feedback.

Sustainable school landscape construction workshops
This case study highlights two projects. For the first, a year 4 class investigate landscape construction on their school grounds and that of another local school. Students compare the materials used and the sustainability of each.

The second project sees year 9 students visiting an architect’s studio to learn about sustainable school buildings and grounds, and model making.

Schools can upload their own tried and true learning projects onto the LOtC website using the online form. New case studies are often uploaded so keep your eye on this website.
