Resource review: Archikids Club website

By Susan Elkin | 21 December 2008

Archikids Club, developed by Open House, offers four online games which are ideal for making students at key stage 1 more aware of the built environment.

First there’s Archisnap, in which the student has to match interior shots of buildings such as Tate Modern and the Eden Project with their exteriors, with all the buildings represented in clear photographs. Then there’s Archiscale fun speculating about the height of well-known buildings such as Canary Wharf and the Gherkin in multiples of the student’s own height.

Archimatch teaches students to recognise the standard symbols for items such as bed, bath or window on a building floor plan, while Archiwords helps teach the definitions of basic architectural terms. Students have to fill the gaps in a word such as EL-V-T--N, using clues and a wordsearch puzzle to find the answers.

All these games work slickly and the answers come up instantly on request. Because of its highly visual nature, children aged as young as four could have fun and learn about buildings with this.

Key stages: 1 and 2

Key subjects: history, English, maths

Built environment education: architectural styles, building design
