Resource review: De La Warr Pavilion resource pack

By Miquette Roberts | 20 December 2008

The De La Warr Pavilion resource pack is full of imaginative ideas. Although intended to support school visits to the Modernist steel-framed De La Warr Pavilion, which opened in Bexhill-on-Sea in December 1935, it would be useful for looking at, drawing and thinking about any building, starting with the one you are in.

The De La Warr Pavilion is a prime example of the Modernist movement of the 1930s. This resource places it in its historical context, and encourages discussion about the many groups involved in commissioning a building.

Included are a teacher’s leaflet, colour photos of building details and textures, wordlists and quotes to stimulate discussion, a timeline and a viewfinder. One of four posters describes the commission awarded to Serge Chermayeff and Erich Mendelsohn, a Jewish architect fleeing Hitler’s Germany; the other three offer suggestions for first ideas and responses. The pack will stimulate thinking about how we move through a building and how we can investigate structure, materials and models.

Key stages: all

Key subjects: history, science, maths, art & design, design & technology

Built environment education: heritage, building design, building construction, architectural styles
