Pitzhanger Manor House & Gallery is a major cultural venue in West London.

The venue comprises the Grade I listed house once owned and designed by Sir John Soane (1753-1837), architect and surveyor to the Bank of England, and the adjacent gallery housed in the 1939 extension to the house.

The house was partially restored and opened to the public in the 1980s. The gallery opened in 1996 and plays host to 6-7 major art, architecture and design exhibitions annually and has shown works by UK and international artists.

In 2015 the house and gallery will close for a major renovation and conservation project which will see the house fully returned to its former glory, the gallery refurbished and upgraded, plus a new restaurant and event space built in the kitchen garden.

Reason & Intuition: Alvar Aalto & Ola Kolehmainen in Soane

  • 4 July — 24 August 2014 *on now

Alvar Aalto’s modernist creations will fill Pitzhanger Manor acting as a counterpoint to the Regency surroundings of the house. The exhibition will feature around forty Aalto designs, including chairs, tables, lights, glassware and textiles, as well as rarer pieces, such as a collection of original designs and plans for some of Aalto’s 500 buildings and glassware designed by his first wife and collaborator, Aino.

Meanwhile three distinct collections of Ola Kolehmainen photography will take over PM Gallery: his acclaimed, abstract, Aalto-influenced architectural images (featuring some Aalto buildings), as well as new work exploring the Siena Cathedral in Italy (a building highly regarded by Aalto) and the most significant mosques in Istanbul.

Crafting Narrative

  • 9 September — 19 October 2014

Crafting Narrative explores how contemporary designers and makers use objects as mediums to tell stories. The exhibition will focus on practitioners who challenge and investigate the narrative potential of objects and making to convey and reflect on themes as diverse as history, culture, society and technology. New and commissioned works will be shown alongside film, text and photography, highlighting how objects can be used as affecting and compelling narrative forms.

Crafting Narrative is a Crafts Council touring exhibition, guest curated by Onkar Kular.
