In the French film Amélie the main character sends her father a series of snapshots of their garden gnome on holidays in exotic locations. These quirky photos are the catalyst for his own explorations outside the confines of his home. As part of the ‘Beauty and the school’ photographic competition students will journey through their own school, discovering the beauty it holds and recording it with the help of their own little mascot!
Engaging Places has produced a lesson plan and image bank resource (see links at top of article) designed to generate discussion about beauty in the built environment. They can be used as preparation for entering the Engaging Places ‘Beauty in the school’ photographic competition, or as a stand-alone resource. This competition is open to schools in the Greater London area.
Students of all ages can observe, compare and discuss a range of buildings to help them decide what they find most attractive in their own school building. Then the real fun begins! The class will take their mascot on a tour of the school, photographing it in the places they love best, producing their own Amélie-style image. The best photo can then be entered into the ‘Beauty and the school’ competition.
