There were a variety of exciting applications, each seeking to increase public understanding and involvement in architecture and the built environment, and helping to create better designed buildings, spaces and places. A key area that will benefit is the field of built environment education, with many innovative applications being received.

Northern Architecture in Newcastle upon Tyne was awarded close to £50,000 to develop new approaches to learning about architecture and the built environment.

Using various techniques, schools will tackle subjects such as sustainable building, green infrastructure and zero carbon targets. Over 450 young people will attend specially provided workshops.

In Wakefield, Beam, an arts, architecture and learning organisation, will be looking to create a range of exciting, innovative projects, including:

  • Developing an online interactive network to promote discussion about good design.
  • Bringing students, teachers, governors, local authority representatives and members of the wider community together to share ideas and experiences which will influence the future of school design in the local area.
  • Hosting a broadcast conference for schools to discuss the future of the buildings around them.

London’s Fundamental Architectural Inclusion will be looking to build on their unique in-depth knowledge of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and legacy developments.

Working with young people from each of the five host Olympic boroughs in East London, the programme will develop a youth panel and a “positive pathways” initiative to increase knowledge, skills and understanding among local young people. Read about what Fundamental are doing with their Legacy Now Youth Panel.
